Money Changers in My Temple

“Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”
John 2: 16

Dear Missionaries in Christ,

Incredibly, Holy Week is just three short weeks ahead! Let’s use the next three weeks to prepare our souls to be the very best missionaries we can be, for Him.

Last Monday’s reading really hit home.  Money changers in the temple!  What are the money changers in my temple?  And how are they distracting me from using my temple for its created purpose, praising God?  And which of those have I begun to rationalize, like the money changers probably did, as “necessary” for the temple operations?  Let’s dig deep in our nightly self-examinations this week, acknowledge those areas in our lives where an attachment or bad habit of some kind is getting in between me and God.  Then let’s use the sacrament of confession to throw it out, to bring it before God and to seek His grace to cure us.

There is no single better way to prepare for success as a missionary than the sacrament of reconciliation.  Only when we fill ourselves with the graces of this sacrament can we exude the joy and confidence we need to bring others to Him.  You can’t sell what you don’t have.

Let’s all resolve to double up on our spiritual training in the next three weeks, as St. Paul advised:

“I drive my body, and I train for it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.”
1 Corinthians 9:27
