A Pastor Who Shapes Identity

On any given day, the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral tells many stories at once. A weekday Mass filled with young professionals before work. A Spanish-language celebration echoing with family voices. A visitor stepping inside, drawn by beauty, reverence, and quiet prayer. What holds all of this together is not chance—it is leadership rooted in clarity and care.

At the center of that leadership is Fr. Daniel Ray, LC.

As pastor, Fr. Daniel carries the responsibility of safeguarding the identity of the Basilica—not simply as a parish with many programs, but as a sacred space with a distinct mission in the heart of New York City. A Basilica is called to be more: more intentional in its liturgy, more faithful in its teaching, more beautiful in its worship, and more welcoming to all who enter. Fr. Daniel understands that this identity must be lived daily, not just defined on paper.

Parishioners often describe the Basilica as a place that feels both large and personal, rooted and alive. That balance is no small task. The community includes young professionals who have recently arrived in the city, long-standing Spanish-speaking families, Italian expatriates, and English-speaking parishioners from across generations. Fr. Daniel’s pastoral approach ensures that no one group defines the parish alone—yet everyone recognizes the same spiritual home.

Under his guidance, the Basilica has remained firmly anchored in reverent liturgy, strong preaching, and fidelity to the Church, while also allowing diverse expressions of faith to flourish. Ministries and apostolates are not siloed; they are integrated into a larger vision of communion. Parish life is active, but never scattered.

Entrusted to the care of the Legionaries of Christ, the Basilica also serves as a place of evangelization well beyond its walls. Fr. Daniel brings the Legionary charism into parish life with intention and humility, working closely with other Legionary priests, Regnum Christi members, and non-Legionary clergy. The result is a parish that feels unified rather than divided—mission-driven rather than personality-driven.

Those who work closely with Fr. Daniel note his steady presence and his ability to see both the immediate needs of parish life and the long-term mission of the Basilica. Decisions are made with an eye toward sustainability, fidelity, and spiritual fruit. In a city that is constantly changing, this consistency offers something rare: trust.

At a time when many parishes struggle to define who they are and whom they serve, the Basilica stands as a place of clarity. That clarity flows from Fr. Daniel Ray’s commitment to identity—Catholic, Basilica-centered, missionary, and pastoral. Through his leadership, the Basilica continues to be not just a destination, but a spiritual anchor for countless souls in New York City.

In the heart of Lower Manhattan stands the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral—a witness to over two centuries of New York’s Catholic story. Earlier this month, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, head of the Archdiocese of New York, entrusted the historic Basilica, known fondly as Old St. Pat’s, to the Legionaries of Christ. On August 15th, Fr. Daniel Ray, LC, was appointed as pastor, with support from the Legionaries of Christ community in Rye, NY. Fr. Daniel’s official installation will occur on Sunday, November 1.

“It’s such a beautiful, historic, and vibrant church,” says Fr. Daniel. “We’ve been blessed to be collaborating with Old St. Pat’s for a number of years and hope to be able to keep such a good thing going with the community.”
